Student Programs
DAT Preparatory Course: This preparatory course is a 14-session (42 contact hours) program to improve dental school applicant performance on the DAT. The course is available in February, May and October, and includes personalized classroom instruction and in-center practice.

Dual Degree/Early Acceptance Program (DEAP)
The Pre-Entry Course: this program is offered to newly-accepted students prior to their enrollment in dental
school. It consists of non-credit previews of selected subjects addressed during the first year of dental
school, including anatomy, histology and biochemistry. Opportunities are also provided for student
adjustment to the dental school environment, and principles needed to develop necessary manual and
perceptual skills more rapidly.

Sophomore Enrichment Course: Designed to provide UTHSCSA dental students with a preview of upcoming courses for the second year of dental school. The course also provides laboratory exercises to improve their manual skills, as well as training for serving as advisors for the new pre-entry students. Course is offered during the summer.

NBDE parts I & II: This program component provides opportunities for dental students to enroll in the Kaplan NBDE I & II preparatory course. It is a three-month basic and clinical sciences review course to improve performance on the National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) and pass the exam on the first attempt.
Student Research: A program that provides dental students with opportunities to participate in oral health-related research under the guidance of faculty mentors.

Training in Providing Health Services: This program is coordinated with the Office of the Associate Dean for External Affairs, and provides dental students the opportunity to receive clinical training in predominantly Hispanic urban and rural community health clinics. The program enables students to enhance clinical skills and expand their knowledge on culturally-sensitive oral health care. Students work under the supervision of adjunct faculty at the sites.

Computer-assisted Instruction: Facilitates material to improve students' performance on National Board Dental Examination.
Tutoring Services: A program coordinated with the Office of the Associate Dean of Student Affairs to provide tutoring to dental students who need academic assistance.

Spanish Course for the Dental Clinic: A selective course offered every spring semester in elementary conversational Spanish and terminology used in the dental clinic, provided for the benefit of students and faculty to improve communication with Spanish-only speaking patients.
Seminars on Hispanic Oral Health Issues: Designed to educate dental students and other interested individuals, including faculty, regarding problems, issues and factors that may affect oral health of Hispanics.
