Hispanic Center of Excellence - Dentistry - Curricula and Cultural Competence

Information Resources:

HCOE-D facilitates access to scientific literature on matters pertaining to oral health, and factors that may affect prevalence and trends of oral diseases of Hispanic populations. In collaboration with the Hispanic Dental Association the HCOE-D also facilitates dissemination on Hispanics Oral Health disparities excerpts from the Surgeon General Report on Oral Health.

Clinical education:

All students attending dental school receive education on health promotion, disease prevention and diseases affecting the population. Students are instructed in the management of special conditions that may affect population groups including Hispanics; since a large number of patients seeking health services at the dental school are Hispanics, students have the opportunity to apply in the clinic the knowledge acquired in didactic courses.

Curricula:

Oral health: A module pertaining to minority oral health issues with particular emphasis on Hispanic population groups was developed. The module is designed to prepare dental students with a seminar series on oral health, diseases and trends affecting Hispanics.

Cultural competence: Workshops are offered various times during the year. Students reflect their own cultural experiences and how these may have influenced their goals and achievements in education, as well as their oral health status. Topics include standards for culturally and linguistically appropriate health care services, culturally competent care, language access services, and organizational support, health policies and training, issues affecting oral health disparities and quality of oral health care, and how health care provider's attitude or practices may negatively affect patients acceptance to treatment are also reviewed. Cultural traditions/remedies used for managing dental illness, the influence of family and religion in oral health, acculturation issues and recommendations for improving interactions with the Hispanic patient.
